NEWS RELEASE: December 7, 2009
The 2010 Florida International Air Show will trace the history of aviation with acts from many of the top aerobatic pilots in the world. That was the enthusiastic description given by Air Boss Bob Hall as he discussed some of the acts that will appear at the Florida Air Show’s 30th Anniversary presentation on April 10th and 11th. Bob added that, “This year’s show will be filled with amazing demonstrations in the air and on the ground. We’ll see aircraft dating from before World War II to the present day tactical fighters.”
Some of the acts scheduled to appear are:
The Aeroshell aerobatic team that flies the AT-6, a World War II North American Advanced Trainer; the aircraft that launched thousands of American and Canadian cadets on their flying careers.
Flying the MX2 Aerobatic Aircraft, Rob Holland brings an unrivaled performance in the sky over America's best air shows. Rob pushes the envelope of the most advanced aerobatic aircraft in the air show industry today. With a high energy mixture of both high and low altitude maneuvers, Rob is a World Champion aviator. He led Team USA to the GOLD MEDAL at the 8th Advanced World Aerobatic Championships in 2008.
Then we will switch to the ultimate in graceful and elegant flying. Manfred Radius soars into the air in a fully aerobatic sailplane - a pure one without an engine. His gentle performance is awesome, so graceful, so peaceful, a total feeling of freedom and relaxing. And the grand finale, the Inverted Ribbon Cut, is spectacular. This is not just another act; it’s pure flying at its best.
One of the most unusual performances will come from the World War II Aerial Demonstration Team. The team takes the crowd back in time and shows what it was like during that time of strife.
Hall added; he is also working on a schedule that would bring additional high performance military aircraft to the show. That schedule will be released at a later date.
“This year as a result of our reputation of putting on outstanding air shows, the Florida International Air Show has been named one of the top 20 events in the Southeastern United States by the Southeast Tourism society".
As show time nears, information on all of the acts will be on the show’s web site at www.floridaairshow.com.

Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands Invites Beachgoers to Protect Natural Resources
“Nesting instinct” draws wildlife; enthusiasts can combine vacation with education about shorebirds, sea turtles, and more.
Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands, Fla. (July 15, 2009) – This summer, it’s time to make a difference. The Charlotte Harbor Visitor & Convention Bureau invites visitors to discover the quieter side of Florida on its uncrowded, unspoiled beaches, where the wildlife often outnumbers the humans. Summer is the nesting season for spectacular shorebirds and endangered sea turtles, and tourists can safely share the beaches and even become volunteer stewards of nature in protecting these threatened species.
For those who want to help increase populations of shorebirds and sea turtles, the Charlotte County Natural Resources Division (CCNRD) offers volunteer programs that take place on some of the area’s most delightful, secluded beaches, including Stump Pass State Park, Palm Island and Don Pedro Island State Park.
“The focus here is on education and enlightenment of Charlotte Harbor’s natural side,” says Missy Christie, Environmental Specialist with the CCNRD. “Protection of our many threatened and endangered species is one of our main priorities, and many hands are needed. We offer plenty of opportunities for individuals and groups to take part in our conservation programs.”
Visitors here can spread their own wings by enjoying the warm gulf waters and participating in hands-on activities such as bird counts and protection of nesting habitats. One good example is the CCNRD’s “Shorebird Steward Nesting” program in which participants learn about habitat loss, nest site disturbance by dogs and humans, and loss of suitable migratory stopovers and resting areas. Located on the North American Migration Flyway and the Great Florida Birding Trail (www.FloridaBirdingTrail.com), Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands’ miles of undeveloped and protected beaches provide a vital nesting ground for a variety of shorebirds including the endangered snowy plover. There are only 45 nesting pairs of snowy plover left on the southwest gulf coast of Florida, and the beaches of Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands serve as a home for six of these pairs. Personal volunteering experiences and outings are available by contacting the CCNRD at (941) 764-4392. For more information on the CCNRD’s efforts, visit http://www.charlottecountyfl.com/EnvironmentalServices/NaturalResources
For both migratory and year-round birding, both amateur and professional ornithologists can spot common species like gulls, herons, egrets, but especially the more uncommon birds like the exotic Roseate Spoonbill, the curiously beautiful Wood Stork, the Least Tern, the Crested Caracara, and many varieties of warblers.
Also through the CCNRD, Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands offers personal educational outreach programs on the ancient and enduring sea turtle, a species that comes to nest on the secluded barrier islands. Sea turtles return year after year to nest on the same beach where they were hatched, but there has been an alarming decline in activity. Sea turtle conservation volunteer programs offer guidance for safety measures that all citizens can take to produce safe beaches for these ancient goliaths of the sea to come “home” to, including measures to curtail artificial lighting, keeping beaches free of debris for plenty of open spaces, and teaching dog owners the dangers their pets present to nesting females and hatchlings.

SIDEBAR:
Because 84 percent of its 219 miles of shoreline is protected preserve, wildlife naturally gravitates to the nature preserves and barrier island beaches of Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands. The Charlotte Harbor Visitor & Convention Bureau has teamed with the Charlotte
County Natural Resources Division to help vacationers learn how to peacefully co-exist with threatened and endangered birds and sea turtles. They offer these tips for protecting wildlife during your next trip to the beach:
Shorebird nesting season runs from February through August; sea turtles nest from May through October. Rather than building obvious nests, these species dig shallow holes; eggs are the same color as the sand. Be on the lookout for signs or roped-off areas, but know that some areas may not yet be discovered or posted.
While dogs and cars are not permitted on Charlotte County public beaches for environmental reasons, visitors staying in private homes or condominiums should keep pets on leashes, out of nesting areas and away from the temptation to scare colonies or solitary birds who may be feeding, resting or incubating eggs.
Stay clear of birds displaying aggressive behaviors such as diving at people, screeching loudly, or even acting injured in attempts to lure danger from the nesting site.
If you observe aggressive behavior, back away as quickly and quietly as possible; birds will quickly abandon nesting sites if they are disturbed.
